Though AIDS ha hit all social groups, the cost of tests to confirm incidence and treatment it has come down according to Dr. G.Raghuram, Head of the Department of Dermatology of Andhra Medical College. He said that testing could be done for a mere Rs.10/- at any of the voluntary testing and counselling centres or at NGOs like Sadhana. The regimen of drugs which used to cost about Rs.3000 a month had come down to Rs.900. It would be better to purchase medicines from wholesale traders to reduce the cost.
Owing to less cost, several of the patients were leading an active life earning a living instead of confining themselves to bed, he said.
Dr.Raghuram said that even among family members acceptance of the HIV affected had gone up, families were supporting patients and getting them treated. He favored production of certificates by both bride and groom before marriage took place. He opined that sex education should be introduced from Plus Two level.
