The Visakhapatnam Airport is christened on the name of the first Women Prime Minister of India – Smt. Indira Gandhi. The Airport is a Domestic Airport and caters to short to medium air travels within India. There are near about 24 Domestic Airports in India. However, the Visakhapatnam Airport has its own name and fame.

The Visakhapatnam Airport registered an increase of 51.2% in domestic traffic as on February 2005 because of the increased operations by low cost Airlines and increased frequency of existing Airlines.

Domestic Aircraft movements increased by 66.4% during February 2005 – particularly because of the increase of operations by Air Deccan and Air Sahara in the Southern India sector. Aircraft movements are at 377 in February 2005 compared to 242 in February 2004. Passenger traffic at the Airport grew by 34.0%.

Plans are on for the expansion of the Visakhapatnam Airport. Visakhapatnam International Airport is also on charts.

Visakhapatnam Airport enjoys the strategic locational advantage over many other airports in Southern India. Visakhapatnam, being near to the East Coast of India will be the shortest distance connecting to other South Asian destinations such as Bangkok, Singapore, Colombo, Kuala Lumpur and Ho Chi Minh City. Once the Visakhapatnam International Airport becomes operations, South Asia and Pacific Airliners such as Silk Airways, Thai Airways International, Sri Lankan Airways, Malaysian Airlines, Vietnam Airlines, Lufthansa, KLM Royal Dutch Airlines, Emirates, Royal Nepal Airlines, Biman Bangladesh Airlines and Air India would start their flights connecting India to their respective destinations.

Jet Airways ran its operations from Visakhapatnam for sometime however discontinued them later.

Nightlanding facility

Though, the Visakhapatnam Airport got its Nightlanding facility in 2007, it could not be implemented for domestic airline operations due to lact of specially trained staff. Sources say Defence foces have sent in proposals for the Union Finance Minstry for grant of funds to employ staff for the purpose. Atleast 40 - 50 specially trainned personnel would be required to run a night landing facility at the Airport at its bare minimum.
