Mayor Mrs. Rajana Ramani met with the people who lost their homes in the recent fire accident in Akkayyapalem. She said that help would be extended to them as per rules. May 2, 2001 A major fire broke off at Srinuvasanagar near Akkayyapalem turning 19 houses to ash. It was belived that a blast in a Gas Cylinder has triggered the fire which spread to the neighboring houses. The Labour Department raided about 198 shops in the District and registered cases for violation of the rule to close the shops as per the Shops and Establishments Act. About 52 cases were registered and Rs. 13,750 was collected as fines. The Visakhapatnam Port Trust team recorded its second win in the All-India 25th Major Ports Football Championship beating Paradeep with 4-0. May 1, 2001 Chief Minister Sri Chandrababu Naidu held a Video Conference with Ministers Sri KE Prabhakar, Sri Ayyannapatrudu, District Collector Sri JSV Prasad, Joint Collector Sri Krishna Babu, VUDA Chairman Sri SGK Kishore and VMC Commissioner Sri Sanjay Jaaju. CM said that Rs. 13 Crores was allocated for the Neeru - Meeru program and asked the authorities to see that the funds allocated were utilised properly. 2 people died when an APSRTC Bus 400V has ran over them when the brakes of the bus failed. A fire broke out off the Engine Room of the Ship "Supreme Flair". The Port Authorities immediately went into action and brought the fire into control. Visakhapatnam Port Trust Docks Manager Mr. B Vijaya Sagar said that the fire boke at around 11:30 AM and was brought under control at 1:48 PM and that the fault was with the Chief Engineer.
