With ever increasing demand for oil, natural gas, coal, base metals etc., due to industrial revolution and modern life style of the man, and with rapid decline in these conventional natural resources, attention is now focused on exploration of non-conventional energy resources like gas hydrates, polymetallic nodules, phosphorites, hydrothermal vents, placer deposits, coral reefs and other bioactive substances, etc. Research in evaluating geological, geophysical, geochemical and biological exploration strategies for these non-conventional energy resources is still young and cases of their application to specific sites in India are fewer in number. The impact of exploiting the non-conventional energy resources on the natural environment and the probable hazards that it can create also need careful examination.
A two-day seminar on Exploration for Non-Conventional Resources - Tools and Strategies (ENCORETS) is therefore planned jointly by the Department of Geophysics, Andhra University, Visakhaptnam and Andhra Pradesh Akademi of Sciences, Hyderabad, with a view of providing a platform to exchange ideas by fellow scientists in this young area of research and publicizing the results of the ongoing programs of various institutions to a wider spectrum of scientists.
