The Department |
The Department of Commernce and Management Studies ( DCMS ) is a pioneer in Commerce Education in South India. It is the single largest faculty in Andhra University offering Commerce and Management Courses in almost all the colleges affiliated to this University. It is no exaggeration to say that every new college, is making a beginning only with Commerce Courses. This Department of Commerce and Management Studies in the University was established in 1934 offering B.Com course to begin with. A decade afterwards, Honours courses both at Bachelor's and Master's Degree level were started. Research facilities leading to the award of Ph.D. and M.Com. (Hons.) / M.Phil Degrees were also provided in the Department since then.
Recognising the need for developing professional managers to man the executive positions in different businesses and non-business organisations especially after the commencement of economic planning in the country, a Master's Degree Course in Business Administration (MBA) was started for the first time in India in 1957. It may be noted that the MBA programme owes its origin in the University to the foresight, initiative and interest evinced by late Prof. V S Krishna the then Vice-Chancellor and Prof. K K Das, the first from South East Asia to be awarded the Degree of D.C.S by the Harvard University as the Head of the Department. Their seedlings of M.B.A programme in this University have been well nourished and nurtured subsequently under the dynamic leadership of Prof. K V Sivayya. The Silver Jubliee of M.B.A Programme was celebrated in 1983 and as part of the programme, a National Seminar on 'Management Education' was organised by inviting industrialists and academicians from within and outside India. It has been the incessant endeavor of the past and the present faculty to improve, add and achieve new heights of academic wealth and to serve the needs of industry and society. Indeed, it is a proud privilege of this Department to have alumni occupying positions of responsibility in India and abroad.
